I notice a rather disturbing and rather misandristic double standard when it comes to gaming.
When a girl gamers plays as a male character, people don't mock for it and ask shit like "Is the main hero a dreamboat?" or go into fangirl mode over male characters. No one seems to complain about girls playings as guys or choosing male characters, even going far as crushing on the male protagonist and wanting his babies.
But...but...
When a guy gamer plays as a female character, he gets labeled a "pervert", "rapist in training", "low-life", "sexist pig" and a "horny fat nerd who can't get a girlfriend in real life". So, how is a guy playing as or choosing a female character over a male character being a pervert or rapist in training? It's like saying that "beautiful or cute female characters transforms men into horny rapists", which isn't true (for a lot of times anyways). Personally, I find those statements about guy games just sick and disgusting.
So yeah, I've been around some rather misandristic gamers, and despite what you might have heard, misandry does exist in the gaming community.
There was one time on GameFAQs forums where a guy gamer posted up a pin up of the Soul Calibur girls, and everyone called him a misogynistic pig and pervert. But when a girl gamer talked about young Link from "The Legend of Zelda" being hot and wanting to "put his candy cane in her mouth", I was the only one that complained about it. And the hypocrites at GameFAQs banned me from the message boards, but didn't ban the girl who rambled on about wanting to bang a 10 year old male. No...just no....
So, there you have it. Personally, I don't care what gender the character is or what clothes the character is wearing. If that character is interesting, likeable and/or fun to play as, that's all that matters to me. Should be the same for everyone else.
Alice Madness Returns…my favorite game. the character you play as is female, and i'm a guy. my character on Rainbow Six Vegas is a woman. who cares what gender a video-game character you play as is? girls should be allowed to play as guys and guys should be allowed to play as girls…end of story
It's been a long time I don'T play video games, specially mmorpgs, so I never noticed it. At first I noticed it was quite common to have male players using female characters, so I decided to play with male characters that I liked as well and everybody lived happily ever after.
Putting aside the "cute" games, most of those characters are common steriotypes that people can identify with, or feel better when playing with them, satisfying some inner wills when they project themselves on those characters. Male and female characters are done to satisfy both genders. When you play with the same gender, it's like you identify yourself with your character easier (but it can happen with the opposite as well), and when you play with the opposite, it is (most of the time) because you like the appearence of your character, you like to look at him/her.
But I have to admit, as a female player, many times I find myself having trouble to identify with female characters and that's the reason I like to play mostly with male chars. I know there are other female players who like those chars, I don'T blame them, but I wished more options rather than "petit cute" or "little-to-no clothes"
This is a different topic, sorry, it's because I didn't experience the actual subject.
Indeed. I tend to play as female characters, and male ones too, just has to do with my mood. Cute things cool my rage, which allows me to function as a normally fellow of the internet, rather than Godzilla's Internet Hate Machine. But enough about my past, I like cute female characters because, eh, they're cute, and it is fun to watch them fight demons larger than them, and kick their ass.
They are often decent women at heart, and are also able to fight with the rest of them. As I say, if women wish for equality, they need to step up to the plate. I don't care how insensitive it sounds, because the truth has no sensitivity.
